• DRS to be used in IPL 2018

The Decision Review System (DRS) will be introduced in IPL 2018 for the first time in IPL history.

The Indian Premiere League is the second T20 League to use DRS after the Pakistan Super League. BCCI has always been stubborn against DRS, insisting that the review system is not as effective as it claims to be.

The board mended their ties with DRS only in late 2016 before England’s tour of India. And recently, BCCI has finally given green light to introduce DRS in IPL after so many years of hesitancy.

    What is DRS?

The Decision Review System grants reviews to each team which the players can use to probe the on field umpires’ decisions with the third umpire.

The fielding team can use the review to dispute a not out call while the batting team uses it query the ‘out’ call.

How effective will DRS be in IPL?

The introduction of DRS technology is a great move by BCCI as we have seen teams grumble about the flaws in the umpires’ decision on field. With DRS, players get to review the umpire decision and hence the chance of errors will be cut down.

    BCCI Decision

The BCCI and IPL board had called for a session with the 10 domestic IPL umpires at Vizag in December.

Denis Burns, the coach of ICC Umpires and Paul Reiffel, the Australian pacer-turned umpire had come for the session to brief the IPL umpires about DRS technology, as they will be officiating this year IPL.

A domestic IPL umpire who attended the session said that the local IPL umpires were trained about DRS as Indian domestic cricket does not use DRS.
