Net Run Rate (NRR) Calculator
How To Calculate Net Run Rate(NRR) in IPL?
Net Run Rate is calculated for team based on the complete scorecard of the match. i.e., we need to consider the score of the opponent team as well.
This is useful when in a tournament – if two teams have same points – the team with a better net run rate gets advantage in points table position over the team with a less NRR.
NRR Calculation Formula:
Net Run Rate = (Run Rate For) – (Run Rate Against) where,
- (Run Rate For) = (Runs Scored by Team) / (Number of Overs Faced)
- (Run Rate Against) = (Runs Scored by Opponent Team) / (Number of Overs Bowled)
Note: If it is a 50 overs match & team loses all the wicket in 35 overs, number of overs will be considered as 50 for run rate calculations. This is applicable to IPL, T20 & One day international matches.

How Net Run Rate is Calculated – Example
Lets assume it is a T20 IPL match against CSK & SRH.
Innings1:
SRH Scored 179/4 in 20 overs.
Run Rate for SRH is 179/20 = 8.95
Innings 2:
CSK scored 180/2 in 19 overs.
Run rate for CSK is 180/19 = 9.47
Net Run Rate:
So ., Net Run rate for CSK is (9.47 – 8.95) = 0.52
Net Run Rate for SRH is (8.95 – 9.47) = -0.52
If the match is abandoned after 1 innings this NRR cannot be calculated using the above method. If in case it resulted in DL method to determine the winner, then NRR deviates a bit from the above calculation steps which is explained in this page.

Overall it is the rate of runs score by each team per over (6 balls). Usually in big tournaments like IPL this run rate from each match get accumulated in the points table.
In case there is a tie in total points for 2 or more teams in league matches, then the Net run rate is compared. Teams with higher run rate than other teams will be selected to move to next level in the tournament.
